The National Service Scheme of the college has one Boy’s unit under the Degree wing. A unit consists of twenty five student volunteers. During a year the college conducts two Vocational Camp preferably during the Puja Vacation and the summer vacation. In addition several one day Programmes are organized at regular intervals. This Unit sincerely make effort to involves the students with the community service.The unit is headed by a trained faculty of the college.
The National Service Scheme was introduced in the College from the Academic Session 1984 – 85 with an aim and objective of developing the students’ personality through community service and participation. The very purpose of N.S.S is to engage the students in creative and constructive social work and to gain new experiences from the social realities which help them to understand life in true spirit and to enrich their personalities. In this College we had three units of N.S.S two for boys’ and one for girls’ operating under the direct guidance and supervision of N.S.S Bureau, Utkal University, Vanivihar, Bhubaneswar. But now one N.S.S unit (Boys) is operating in the College and Mr.Gurucharan Sethi, Lect.in-Sociology is acting as Programme Officer of this unit. The N.S.S. Advisory Committee is formed to prepare plans and programmes of N.S.S for each Academic Session and to evaluate the work of the units at the end of the session.
Selection of volunteers are made among the students for each unit. The newly selected volunteers are given orientation training by the Programme Officers and Resource Persons and person having social service background. The overall activities of different units are undertaken through normal activities as regular programmes.
During the last four years N.S.S. unit of the College organized special and normal camps in nearby villages and localities.
N.S.S Activities in 2011-12
One unit of N.S.S. undertook a special camp at Balabhadrapur U.P. School, Balabhadrapur from 20th October’11 to 29th October’2011 with active participation of volunteers and villagers. The camp was inaugurated by Dr.Harish Chandra Prusty, the Principal of this College. A Yoga Programme was conducted for the benefit of the students and villagers. Awareness programme on cyclone and flood was also held. Health check-up programme was also conducted by Smt. Rekha Devi, the Principal of this College. A normal camp was organized on the College campus to clean the weeds from the play ground.
N.S.S Activities in 2012-13
A special camp was organized at Deshpur Primary School with One N.S.S Unit conducting the various extension activities. The volunteers cleaned the Villages, Deshpur & Jagulaipada which had been ravaged by the flood.
N.S.S Activities in 2013-14
On the campus of Derabis College, Derabish the special camp inaugurated by the Principal. The volunteers undertook the extension activities like awareness on AIDs, Cancer etc. A Programme on Disaster Management was also organized. In the closing Function Prof. A.C. Biswal, Ex-Principal of the College attended as the Chief Guest.
N.S.S Activities in 2014-15
Regular Camps were held on the campus. The volunteers undertook the cleanliness programme on the College road and College campus. And they cleaned the garbage from Derabish Market. In the Closing Function Prof. Sumati Panda, HOD, Zoology spoke on present environmental pollution due to wide use of polythene carry-bags, Prof. Basanta Kumar Baral, Lect.in-Sociology spoke a few words on moral turpitude of the youth in recent years.
